RSO Problem on a Rotor
View of a RSO (recurrent surge oscillation) problem on a rotor, some interturn short found.

  • The test unit is used with an oscilloscope to test both the turn and ground insulations of generator rotors. Rotors can be tested at speed in a generator to test for shorted turns and it can also be used in the stationary mode.
  • With large rotors running at 3000 or 3600 rpm they can develop turn faults at speed, which are not in evidence when stationary.
  • The unit is designed to detect where faults are within the rotor windings, thus making it much easier to repair.
  •  RSO (recurrent surge oscillation) tests look for shorted turns based on the principle of time domain reflectometry.
