A Turbo Generator rotor 2 poles should not have interturns shorts inside the winding because this will create thermal unbalance by overheating. So that depending of how many interturns short found, a prepair is normally necessary.

The test unit is used with an oscilloscope to test both the turn and ground insulations of generator rotors. Rotors can be tested at speed in a generator to test for shorted turns and it can also be used in the stationary mode.

With large rotors running at 3000 or 3600 rpm they can develop turn faults at speed, which are not in evidence when stationary.

The unit is designed to detect where faults are within the rotor windings, thus making it much easier to repair.

RSO (recurrent surge oscillation) tests look for shorted turns based on the principle of time domain reflectometry.
